Pulp mills and paper industry
Pulp and paper industry is one of the key industries of forest complex, which combines different technologic processes of producing pulp, paper (also things like notebooks, newspapers, and napkins), paperboard, and other accompaniments. Due to some technologic specialties of pulp producing there are two main factors of manufacture placement. The first one is connected with raw materials – orientation to places where the trees grow without any obstacles and there are plenty of them. The second factor is the most interesting for us – water proximity.
As the paper mills and pulp industry based on the everyday usage of water, such factories are usually located on big river banks, and then there is an opportunity for wood floating, which is the main basic material for producing. Because of that, there is an important problem of wastewater pollution. After the floating of wood rivers are full of organic and inorganic compounds from trees and chemicals used in a working process.
Pulp and paper wastewater treatment seems to be not so effective because these substances are very toxic and durable. There are different methods of paper mill wastewater treatment: mechanical, biological aerobic and chemical precipitation. The last one considered to be dangerous because it can produce some unknown toxic effects.
New environmental requirements appear every day that is why owners of manufactures have to look for new ways how to make the amount of pollution discharged to rivers less. According to this, the unusual technologies of wastewater treatment in paper and pulp industry spread widely. For example, there is a modern multi-stage technology consisting of the combination of physical and chemical treatment of the most polluted waste streams and biological treatment of wastewater. Speaking more detailed about physicochemical treatment, we can’t leave without a notion a usage of advanced oxidation processes (AOP) with ozone.
